Dellwood Nature Notes – April 2025

Dellwood Nature Notes

Spring is finally here in Dellwood! Spring peepers are calling from the cattail marshes and snowdrops are emerging in the woods. April is also the peak period for spring bird migration. Last night, 17,000 birds flew over Dellwood on their way to breeding grounds in Northern Minnesota and Canada. Watch for dark-eyed juncos foraging on the ground for seeds. Look for rafts of American Coots and Scaups on White Bear Lake. You can help migrating birds by turning off your outdoor lights from 11:00 pm until 6:00 am from now until mid-June.

What is your wingspan?

Birds sitting in a tree may look kind of small, but when you measure them with their wings open, they’re bigger than you think! Hold your arms out and have someone measure the length of your arms from figure tip to figure tip. This is your wingspan. Which bird wingspan most closely matches yours?

Crow: 19 inches
Common merganser: 36 inches
Common loon: 58 inches
Bald eagle: 7 feet
